The world of fashion is infamously known for their “size matters” attitude when it comes to models, especially on magazine covers — but it looks like Vogue is ready to step away from this stereotype! Editor Anna Wintour is pushing hard for Lena Dunham to be featured as a cover girl by organizing a private dinner for the 27-year-old creator and star of HBO’s massive hit show, Girls.
Anna thinks that putting Lena on her cover will attract a fresh, new audience to her magazine, an insider explains to Radar Online. “Anna is trying to seduce Lena into bringing her next-generation audience into the Vogue brand,” the source says. “And she’s willing to violate a lot of Vogue traditions to do it, including putting her on the cover even though she doesn't really conform to the body type that Vogue has featured for most of its history.”
The only other “larger” celebrity to be featured on a Vogue cover was 25-year-old British singer, Adele, who graced the March 2013 ‘Power Issue’ with flowing locks and stunning cat eyes.
Will Lena Dunham Be Covered Up?
Assuming these reports are true and Lena agrees to the cover, the question remains as to how Vogue will handle her photo shoot being that she’s not stick thin — an issue that recent news has shown us baffles fashion magazines to no end.
Elle magazine experienced some serious backlash regarding their choice of attire for plus-size actress Melissa McCarthy, who they featured on their November 2013 cover in an obscenely baggy overcoat. Similarly, Adele’s Vogue cover is a close-up glamour shot of her face and upper torso, showing very little body aside from her seriously sexy cleavage. Both of these covers have been criticized for presumably trying to hide the ladies’ more womanly figures.
Considering the negative attention Elle just received, it will be interesting to see if Vogue makes a marked change in their approach to Lena.
Whatever happens, Lena definitely broke ground with her quirky, shocking and real Girls, so it wouldn't be surprising if she breaks ground with a Vogue cover as well!
